Today we’ve updated Early New England Families, 1641-1700, adding one new sketch. This new sketch features John Fuller and his wife Elizabeth Cole. The Fullers lived in the area of Cambridge, MA which eventually became the town of Newton. The couple had eight children.
The Early New England Families, 1641-1700 study project is led by Alicia Crane Williams. This project highlights heads of families mentioned in Torrey’s New England Marriages to 1700, focusing on individuals who immigrated from 1641 through 1700, grouped by year of marriage.
Interested researchers should also read Alicia’s recent Vita Brevis post “Problems of Age” discussing her research process for this sketch.
The town of Newton presents a very helpful map, the Town Plan from 1700 that clearly shows property owned by John Fuller. I’ve used the image to illustrate this post, but I wanted to link to the higher quality version to make it easier to read and use.
The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center has a Plan of the ancient burial place Newton which also includes the Fuller family name.
We’d like to thank Sam Sturgis for his help adding this sketch to our database.

We have just added a new volume to our New England Historical and Genealogical Register database. This update adds Volume 175; which contains the 2021 Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall issues, and it adds 430 pages and over 8,000 searchable names.
Published quarterly since 1847, the New England Historical and Genealogical Register is the flagship journal of American genealogy and the oldest journal in the field. The Register has featured articles on a wide variety of topics since its inception, including vital records, church records, tax records, land and probate records, cemetery transcriptions, obituaries, and historical essays. Authoritative compiled genealogies have been the centerpiece of the Register for more than 150 years. Thousands of New England families have been treated in the pages of the journal and many more are referenced in incidental ways throughout. These articles may range from short pieces correcting errors in print or solving unusual problems to larger treatments that reveal family origins or present multiple generations of a family.
The indexing for these records includes full names, publication year (not the year of the record), and article titles and authors.
This update is made possible by the efforts of our volunteer David Anderson. If you have some time and would like to get involved in the database digitization and indexing process please contact Rachel Adams, Database Services Volunteer Coordinator via email at rachel.adams@nehgs.org.
The entire run of New England Historical and Genealogical Register is available in our research library, call number F1.N56.

Today we’ve updated our database: Vermont Genealogy, adding Volume 20 from 2015. This database is available thanks to our partnership with the Genealogical Society of Vermont. This update adds over 3,900 new records.
The indexing for this database includes full names, Publication year (not the year of the record), and article titles and authors.
Vermont Genealogy made its debut as a quarterly journal in January 1996. In addition to featuring compiled genealogies, the journal often contains other material including: freeman’s lists; church memberships and dismissals; newspaper vital record abstracts; probate abstracts, cemetery transcriptions, Bible records; Civil War journals; 1890 Census reconstructions; book reviews; and “Seen Elsewhere,” a bibliography of other journal articles relevant to Vermont.
In 2009, Vermont Genealogy switched to semi-annual publication with spring and fall issues. Appointed editor in 2016, Michael F. Dwyer, FASG, has expanded the scope of coverage to include nineteenth-century century immigrant studies, “Gems from the Vermont State Archives,” and continuation of family sketches from “Vermont Families in 1791.”
This update is made possible by the efforts of our volunteer David Anderson.
The entire run of Vermont Genealogy is available at our NEHGS Boston research library, call number F48.V48 1996.

Today we are excited to announce that we have added 4 new cemeteries to Massachusetts: Catholic Cemetery Association Records, 1833-1940: North Cambridge Catholic (Cambridge), St. Mary (Lynn), St. Mary (Salem) and St. Patrick (Watertown). This final update adds 34 new volumes and over 177,000 records to this database and concludes our work on this project, which has been in process since 2019.
The records in this database are primarily lot sales and interments, and may include information about lot owners, date of burial and location of burial. Some of the people represented in these written records may not have purchased a grave marker or their marker may have eroded with time, making this collection essential for research into Catholic burials in this region.
In addition to the searchable database, maps of each cemetery are being made available to help locate burial plots. Where possible, maps include sections, ranges and in some cases narrative description of how headstones are arranged by row and lot number. Also included are points of interest such as entrances, exits, flag poles, monuments, offices and spigots. Special sections for the burials of infants, priests and religious are also noted. Links to the cemetery maps can be found in the Database Description. Watch our how-to video for instructions on navigating to the database and using the cemetery maps. Included in this update we’ve also added links to new maps in the database description.
Newly available maps include):
- St. Francis de Sales (Charlestown)
- Calvary (Winchester)
- Holy Cross (Malden)
- St. Mary (Malden)
