Today we’ve added four new volumes to Massachusetts: Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston Records, 1789-1920 from Immaculate Conception in Newburyport. This update adds over 6,400 records and over 22,900 names to search.
In 1852, a cornerstone was laid for the Immaculate Conception church in Newburyport. When this parish was established, it covered the towns of Ipswich, Rowley, Newbury, West Newbury, Salisbury, and Amesbury. Many of these other towns gained churches of their own as time went on.
We’d like to thank Sam Sturgis for his help making this parish available online.
The new volumes are listed below:
Immaculate Conception (Newburyport) Baptisms, 1901-1918
Immaculate Conception (Newburyport) Baptisms, 1919-1920

Earlier this year we announced a new database of Catholic cemetery records: Massachusetts: Catholic Cemetery Association Records, 1833-1940. Today we’re adding 3 new cemeteries to this database: Immaculate Conception (Marlborough), St. Francis de Sales (Charlestown) and St. Joseph (Lynn). We’re also adding seven new volumes from Holy Cross in Malden, completing the records for this large cemetery.
This update adds 21 new volumes, 96,400 searchable records.
When complete, this database will feature 20 cemeteries administered by the CCA in eastern Massachusetts. 16 cemeteries are available to search now; 4 more will be added by the end of the year.
Most cemeteries are being added all at once. Holy Cross in Malden is the only cemetery that was added to this database in parts, as new volumes became available. All record volumes for this cemetery are now available online as of this most recent update. There is no book labelled “Book 3” for the Lot Sales and Burials. However, presumably little or no information is missing since Book 2 ends in 1875 and Book 4 begins in 1875. The new volumes from Holy Cross included in this update are listed below:
-Holy Cross (Malden) Loose Pages
-Holy Cross (Malden) Lot Purchases and Burials, 1930-1931
-Holy Cross (Malden) Lot Sales and Burials, 1875-1881 (Book 4)
-Holy Cross (Malden) Lot Sales and Burials, 1881-1886 (Book 5)
-Holy Cross (Malden) Lot Sales and Burials, 1939-1940 (Book 17)
-Holy Cross (Malden) Lot Sales Stub Book, 1864-1874
The records in this database are primarily lot sales and interments, and may include information about lot owners, date of burial and location of burial. Some of the people represented in these written records may not have purchased a grave marker or their marker may have eroded with time, making this collection essential for research into Catholic burials in this region.
In addition to the searchable database, maps of each cemetery are being made available to help locate burial plots. Where possible, maps include sections, ranges and in some cases narrative description of how headstones are arranged by row and lot number. Also included are points of interest such as entrances, exits, flag poles, monuments, offices and spigots. Special sections for the burials of infants, priests and religious are also noted. Links to the cemetery maps can be found in the Database Description. Watch our how-to video for instructions on navigating to the database and using the cemetery maps. Not all cemetery maps are currently available; we anticipate that they will be online by the end of the year.

We are very excited to announce a new database: The Narragansett Historical Register. The Narragansett Historical Register was published from 1882 to 1891, and described itself as “A magazine devoted to the Antiquities, Genealogy and Historical Matter illustrating the history of the Narragansett Country, or Southern Rhode Island. The stated aim of this magazine was “to collect into one publication the History of the Narragansett Country or Southern Rhode Island.” The editor, James N. Arnold, (1844 – 1927) was a collector and publisher of genealogical and historical records of the state of Rhode Island. He is most famous for the publication of the 21-volume set entitled The Vital Record of Rhode Island (1636-1850), which is also a database on American Ancestors.
This database is organized into 9 volumes with one for each year of publication. There are over 3,300 pages, and 5,500 records and names. All records have the date of the year of publication.
The entire run of The Narragansett Historical Register is also available at our NEHGS Boston research library, call number F87.N2 N36 1882.

Today we’ve added eleven new volumes and updated four volumes in Massachusetts: Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston Records, 1789-1920 from St. Mary (Lawrence), St. Peter (Lowell) and Our Lady Star of the Sea (Marblehead). This update adds over 44,300 records and over 174,200 names to search.
St. Mary’s was the second Catholic church in Lawrence, coalescing in the year 1848. This church ultimately formed the backbone of Lawrence’s burgeoning Catholic community, splitting into many more parishes. To learn more about the early development of Catholicism in Lawrence, you may want to consult Sketch of Catholicity in Lawrence and vicinity by Katherine O’Keefe (1882), available in our Digital Library and Archive.
St. Peter’s was the second Catholic church in Lowell. In One Hundred Years of Progress, James Sullivan relates how to establishment of this congregation was contentious, as some parishioners who lived far from St. Patrick’s (the original parish) wanted a geographically convenient church, while others would have preferred not to split the church. The first Mass was held in 1842, and from then the parish continued to grow.
Initially, Catholics across northeastern Massachusetts travelled to St. Mary’s in Salem to worship. In 1864, Our Lady Star of the Sea in Marblehead became its own parish. Before Danvers had a parish, Catholics from Danvers often travelled to Marblehead to worship.
We’d like to thank Sam Sturgis for his help making these parishes available online.
