Vital Records from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register: Volume 23 updated

By |

Volume 23, page 107a, showing a handwritten family tree and crest pertaining to the Appleton family

Today we are re-releasing Volume 23 (1869) in Vital Records from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. This is part of our on-going, in-depth re-indexing project that aims to accurately capture all the genealogical data available in this scholarly journal. This update includes over 11,200 records and 23,600 searchable names and has about nine times the number of records previously indexed in this volume.

This ongoing project will unlock the value of all the information captured in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register since the first publication in 1847. We are reviewing every published article and extracting a broad set of previously unavailable records for the articles that are genealogical in nature. So, in addition to birth, marriage, and death records there are now new records including: residences, immigration, military records, church dismissals, and more. The indexing in this effort includes spouses, parents, and locations.

Users of American AncesTREES will also benefit by being able to get hints from the newly indexed volumes in their family trees.

This update is made possible through the work of our volunteers: Jan Lundquist, Elaine Wood, Peg Camp, Renda Smith, Melaine Nelson, Kathleen Oberly, Bruce McKeeman, Ida Nystrom, Rosemary Durica, Pam Hugie, Fran Danico, Karen Buchinger, Bill Kerrigan, Gail Wine, Joan Koesterherm, Nina Manno, Donna McClure, Rich Wood, Phyllis Doucette, Carol Farrington, Linda Mathew, Nancy Johnson, Kay Sencabaugh, David Fredette, Robyn Choate, Jane Himmel, Janet Essency, Pat Dalpiaz, Rick Lagueux, Val Abrahamsen, Mara Witzling and Patricia Ryburn.

If you would like to become part of the team working on this rewarding project to revamp the index to the NEHGS Register, please contact Rachel Adams, Database Services Volunteer Coordinator via email at rachel.adams@nehgs.org.

Published quarterly since 1847, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register is the the oldest journal in the field. The Register has featured articles on a wide variety of topics since its inception, including vital records, church records, tax records, land and probate records, cemetery transcriptions, obituaries, and historical essays. Authoritative compiled genealogies have been the centerpiece of the Register for more than 150 years. Thousands of New England families have been treated in the pages of the journal and many more are referenced in incidental ways throughout. These articles may range from short pieces correcting errors in print or solving unusual problems to larger treatments that reveal family origins or present multiple generations of a family.

St. Michel the Archangel in Haverhill was founded in 1910 under Father Alexander Syski, who built the brick church dedicated on September 17, 1911. In 1940, this parish was trusted to the care of the Franciscan order.

2 new sketches: Early Vermont Settlers

By |

1905 Postcard of Brattleboro, VT (from the Internet Archive)

Today we’ve added two new sketches to Early Vermont Settlers, 1700-1784. The new sketches highlight Josiah and Hannah Bump and their son Reuben Bump, all of Brattleboro.

With this study project, Scott Andrew Bartley researches heads of families who lived in Vermont prior to the Revolutionary War.  These sketches illustrate major players on political and religious fronts, uncover the migration patterns for this period in the region, and identify all those just looking to better their lives on the new frontier.  This project is proceeding in two series, settlers to 1771 and 1772-1784.  The work so far has been geographical, focusing on Windsor and Windham Counties.

Today we’ve added 22 new volumes to Massachusetts: Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston Records, 1789-1920 from St. Michael in Lowell, St. Michael in North Andover and St. Joachim in Rockport. This update adds over 18,700 records and over 62,600 names to search.

St. Michael’s parish began in 1883 when Lowell’s churches were mandated to become geographically-arranged parishes. It was initially served by the priests of St. Patrick’s before it became officially independent. This church was built in Lowell’s Centralville neighborhood, across the river from downtown Lowell.

St. Michael’s Church in North Andover was dedicated in 1869 as many churches proliferated in the Lawrence area. Initially this church was linked with St. Patrick’s in south Lawrence before becoming an independent parish around the turn of the century.

As early as 1856, Catholics were worshiping in Rockport. Prior to the establishment of St. Joachim’s, Catholics would travel to Salem or Gloucester to worship. This parish was established in 1870.

We’d like to thank Sam Sturgis for his help making these parishes available online.
